Telok Ayer Chinese Methodist Church
Telok Ayer Chinese Methodist Church is the oldest Chinese Methodist church in Singapore.
In 1889, Hokkien Methodists were attending church in a rented house in Upper Nankin Street.
As membership grew, the church moved to Boon Tat Street (formerly Japan Street) in 1905.
In 1913, Reverend F.H. Sullivan borrowed funds and acquired a piece of land on Telok Ayer Street.
Church services moved to a tent on the site. When enough funds were raised, a proper church building was constructed in 1924. The
design of the new church building had obvious Chinese influences to reflect the cultural background of its Hokkien members.
Telok Ayer Chinese Methodist Church was gazetted as a national monument in 1989.
Please be advised to dress modestly if you are visiting this place of worship.
