Central Sikh Temple
Central Sikh Temple is the main place of worship for the 15,000 Sikhs in Singapore.
The gurdwara (or Sikh temple) was first built in the police barracks at Pearl's Hill to serve the needs of the Sikh police.
However, as the Sikh community grew, it became apparent that the gurdwara could not accommodate the community's needs.
In 1912, a group of Sikhs led by Sindhi merchant Wassiamull purchased a bungalow at Queen Street and converted it into a gurdwara.
It was later reconstructed in 1921. In 1977, the government acquired the piece of land where the gurdwara stood and so the
temple was housed temporarily in the former Bukit Ho Swee Community Centre.
In November 1986, the new Central Sikh Temple opened at its present Towner Road location and was also awarded the SIA
Architectural Design Award.
Please be advised to dress modestly if you are visiting this place of worship.
