Useful Information
Crime and Safety
Singapore is a very safe country for travelers, free from civil unrest, political instability and terror threats.
Singapore is known to many as being a “FINE CITY”. Littering carries with it a fine of S$1000 and repeat offenders are sent to CWO (Corrective Work
Order), a community form of punishment picking up litters under supervision. Since July 2007, smoking is not allowed in air-conditioned places (generally) and in
queues (yes, including taxi queues in the open). It carries a fine of S$200 for 1st offence up to S$1000. There are many more, so take time to observe and amuse
yourself by discovering the rest of them during your stay in Singapore.
Basic common sense still prevails when it comes to personal safety when traveling in Singapore. Avoid carrying too much cash around. Always use your credit cards
at reputable establishments and check your receipts when done. If your hotel provides a safe deposit box in the room, place your valuables there. When in crowded
places, always stay alert for pick pockets. Even though crime rate is really low in Singapore, you don’t want such incidents to happen to you and spoil your
holiday plans here.
In Singapore, the possession and manufacturing of drugs is a very serious capital offence punishable by the death penalty (hanging).
Possession of firearms in Singapore is a capital offence. Only law enforcement agencies and the military are allowed to own and carry arms.
If ever in doubt or in need of assistance, do not hesitate to approach any police officer you see. They are very friendly and always willing to help anyone in
distress.
