Sungei Buloh Wetland Reserve
Sungei Buloh Wetland Reserve is a 130-hectare nature paradise made up of mangroves, mudflats, ponds and secondary forest.
Originally occupying only 87 hectares, the site was designated as a nature park in 1989 and was officially
opened by then Prime Minister Goh Chok Tong on 6 December 1993.
In 2002, 130 hectares of Sungei Buloh was officially gazetted as a nature reserve and the park was renamed to
Sungei Buloh Wetland Reserve.
The reserve is popular with bird watchers particularly during the migratory season of September to March when
flocks of waders or shorebirds stop here to feed and roost (or "refuel").
Besides birds, the reserve is also home to an amazing 500 species of flora and fauna. You can see otters,
monitor lizards, mudskippers and many other creatures.
It is common to come across monitor lizards resting lazily in the middle of paths.
Yes, the reserve truly offers a close encounter with nature.
If you are visiting, remember to wear comfortable shoes and clothes in neutral colours.
From our personal experience, we also highly recommend insect repellent if you are not keen on
being lunch for the insects.

We encountered this really huge one that was at least 1.5m long. My classmates were screaming like crazy when they saw it. I was elated. It just went about its way slowly walking across the small dirt path we were on.
