Robertson Quay
At the western end of the river near the river source, there is Robertson Quay.
Named after Dr. J Murray Robertson, a prominent Municipal Councillor, the area used to be a swamp.
Due to rapid trade and population growth along the banks of the Singapore River, there was a need for reclamation works
to be carried out in this area so that the land could be developed.
Shortly after being reclaimed in the 19th century,
Robertson Quay became a booming industrial district with many godowns (warehouses), shop houses and offices being built.
Today, many of these godowns and shop houses have been converted into eateries, pubs and arts houses.
Many of the popular night spots can be found along Mohamed Sultan Road, hence the area is also popularly known as
Mohamed Sultan. Come weekends and on the eves of public holidays, the area is crawling with party-goers.
Robertson Quay is perhaps the least touristy out of the three quays. If you are looking for something a bit more off beat,
it may be worth checking out this area. If it does not work out, Zouk is just a stone's throw away.
Getting There
