Our People
Singapore is diversity personified. The city state is a melting pot of races, cultures and religions co-existing in harmony.
The current resident population of almost 3.7 million is made up of 75% Chinese, 13% Malays, 9% Indians and 3% Eurasians and
people of other descent.
Singapore began as a fishing village inhabited by Malay fishermen. The arrival of Sir Stamford Raffles transformed the sleepy
little village into a thriving trading port of activity.
This attracted a large number of migrants and merchants from China, the Malay Peninsula, India, Indonesia and the Middle East
who came seeking a better life for themselves and their families.
Today, this diverse group of people has come to call Singapore their home. They have come together to forge a national identity,
yet at the same time, retain their own cultural identity.
