National Museum of Singapore
The National Museum of Singapore is the Singapore's oldest museum.
Originally founded in 1887 as the Raffles Library and Museum, it was renowned for its natural history collection of Southeast
Asia and was an important centre for research.
In 1965, the museum was renamed to National Museum to reflect the change in focus after Singapore gained its independence.
The museum building was closed temporarily from 2003 to 2006 as a major revamp took place. It was officially opened in December
2006 as the National Museum of Singapore.
Today, it is the largest museum in Singapore with more than 18,000mē of gallery space.
In addition to the original rotunda dome with stained glass, the neo-classical building now features a glass passage as well as a
spectacular glass rotunda.
The museum features a permanent History Gallery that tells the history of Singapore from the 14th century to the current day.
The Living Galleries focus on four themes - Fashion, Film, Food and Photography.
The museum also hosts temporary exhibitions in its Exhibition Galleries.
The National Museum of Singapore prides itself on being more than just an exhibition space. It also organises a variety of
festivals, performances and many other educational programmes throughout the year.
