National Coat of Arms
The national coat of arms or state crest was introduced in 1959 together with the national anthem and national flag.
It symbolised that Singapore has attained statehood.
The state crest is made up of a red shield with a white crescent moon and white five stars emblazoned on it.
The red colour symbolises universal brotherhood and equality of man; the white stands for purity and virtue. Singapore's
ideals of democracy, peace, progress, justice and equality are represented by the five stars.
The shield is flanked by a lion on the left and a tiger on the right. The lion represents Singapore and the tiger signifies
the nation's historical links with Malaysia.
A banner inscribed with the Republic's motto, "Majulah Singapura" is below the shield.
