Merlion Park
The Merlion is one of Singapore's most well known icons.
The statue with the head of a lion and body of a fish was specially designed for the Singapore Tourism Board in 1964.
The original Merlion sculpture was created by Singapore sculptor Lim Nang Seng in 1972.
Constructed of cement fondue around a steel frame, the 8.6 metres high Merlion weighing 70 tonnes stood at
the Merlion Park located at the mouth of the Singapore.
A smaller Merlion Cub measuring two metres high was also built of cement fondue and located just 28 metres behind
the original Merlion. Weighing three tonnes, its skin was made from porcelain plates and eyes from small red teacups.
In 2002, the Merlion and the Cub moved to their present home, the newly built Merlion Park which is adjacent to One Fullerton.
