Malay Heritage Centre
The Istana Kampong Gelam was built by Sultan Ali, the son of Sultan Hussein Shah, more than 160 years ago. Today, the palace is
home to the Malay Heritage Centre.
It is located in Kampong Gelam, the area originally designated by Sir Stamford Raffles for
all Malays and Muslim immigrants.
Steeped in history, the conservation district is home to some of Singapore's oldest and most
significant landmarks such as Masjid Sultan, the oldest mosque in Singapore.
The Malay Heritage Centre was launched in 2005 to showcase and preserve the rich cultural heritage of the Malay people in
Singapore.
The centre's nine galleries hold a collection of artefacts and multimedia displays, providing a window into the
traditions and lifestyles of the Malays and the role they have played in building our nation.
Regular cultural shows allow audience the chance to try their hand at playing the various traditional musical instruments
and to learn some Malay dance moves. Pottery and batik classes are also conducted at the centre.
You will also find a replica of the Bugis prahu (boat), plaques detailing the history of the Bugis people and their trade,
and gelam trees around the regal compound of the centre.
