Sembawang Hot Spring
Not many people are aware that there is a hot spring on mainland Singapore (the other hot spring is on Pulau Tekong).
The Sembawang Hot Spring can be found near the junction of Sembawang Road and Gambas Avenue, off Gambas Avenue along Jalan
Ulu Sembawang.
It is the only natural hot spring on Singapore mainland and is popular for its apparent curative properties.
The natural hot spring was discovered by a Chinese merchant, Seah Eng Keong, in his pineapple estate in Sembawang in 1909.
Soft drinks company Fraser and Neave (F&N) purchased the site in 1922 and bottled the spring water to be sold to
the public under the name "Seletaris".
During the Japanese Occupation, thermal baths were set up in the area for the soldiers to relax in.
In 1960, superstitious punters would turn up at the hot spring to take "good luck" baths. By mid 1980s, the
Singapore Government has acquired most of the land in the area. Heeding calls from the public, this natural hot sring was preserved.
Many believe that the hot spring water has healing properties and they would come from different parts of Singapore to bathe
or soak in the water.
