Little India
As its name suggests, Little India is an ethnic district with Indian cultural elements.
Unlike the other ethnic
quarters, Little India was not originally part of Sir Stamford Raffles' urban plan which designated specific
parts of Singapore to different ethnic groups. The area near Chulia Street was the original designated area for
the Indian community.
As cattle rearing began to be introduced in the Rochor area, new Indian immigrants started
flocking here. The neighbourhood began to be known as Little India.
One of the most famous attractions in Little India is the Sri Veeramakaliamman Temple. It is one of the oldest
Hindu temples in Singapore. Another notable place of worship in Little India is the Sakya Muni Buddha Gaya Temple
which is known for its enormous statue of Buddha surrounded by 989 lights.
For the shopaholic, Little India has a wide array of gorgeous Indian silks, gold jewellery, brass ware and other
trinkets. There are also many other things you can see or do in Little India. Watch the flower garland makers
transform individual flowers into intricate woven garlands. Get your hands painted with traditional henna designs.
See Indian ladies practise the art of eyebrow threading.
By now, your stomach should be growling. Let your nose lead you to any of the Indian restaurants serving rich
Indian cuisine. Have a roti prata or an Indian curry. Or live life on the edge and try both! Be warned though,
the curry can be rather spicy!
When Deepavali comes around, Little India gets lit up with colourful lights, turning it into a fairyland of sorts.
