Kranji Memorials
War and peace. The feeling that these bodies that have been sacrificed during the wars are finally laid to rest permeates
the compound.
Kranji Memorials is made up of three cemeteries - Kranji War Memorial, Military Cemetery and State Cemetery.
The area used to be a military camp and became a prisoner-of-war camp during the Japanese Occupation. After the war, it became
a military cemetery.
The Kranji War Memorial is a tribute to the allied service personnel who lost their lives while defending Singapore.
The cemetery contains 4,458 graves of war casualties and the walls of the memorial are inscribed with the names of 24,000
servicemen whose bodies were never recovered.
The closure of the military cemeteries at Pasir Panjang and Ulu Pandan led to the relocation of the graves to the Military
Cemetery at Kranji in 1975. These were the graves of British and Gurkha soldiers and their families.
The State Cemetery is at the northern end of the area. It holds the graves of former Singapore presidents Yusof Ishak and
Benjamin Sheares who died in 1970 and 1981 respectively.
Take a moment to remember the brave men and women who "died for all free men".
