Kampong Glam/Arab Street
Kampong Glam was named after the Gelam tree, a white-barked tree which grew in the area.
The historic district was designated for the Sultan of Singapore as well as the Malay and Arab communities by
Sir Stamford Raffles in the early 19th century.
Begin your exploration of the colourful district with a visit to the Malay Heritage Centre, former home of the Sultan.
Learn about the rich heritage of the Malay people that called Kampong Glam home.
Continue on to the Sultan Mosque (or Masjid Sultan) which is the oldest and most important mosque in Singapore. Astound in its
architectural splendour, specifically the massive golden dome that makes the mosque an imposing historical landmark in the area.
Ready for a spot of shopping? Head on down to Arab Street which promises an explosion of colours, smells and textures. Textiles
of every imaginable kind spill from the quaint little shops. From luxurious silk to gorgeous chiffon, in the most magnificent
of colours, there is something for every fabric lover.
If textiles are not your cup of tea, proceed to the shops filled with all manner of basket goods, be it cane, rattan or straw.
Perhaps you prefer something a little more fragrant or delicate. Check out the shops selling perfumes and trinkets.
Wind down your day with a steaming hot glass of teh tarik (pulled milk tea) at the drinks stall with no name along Bussorah
Street, near the junction with Baghdad Street. Aside from offering one of the most delicious teh tarik in town, at SGD 0.60 a
glass, it is also one of the cheapest!
