Singapore General Hospital (SGH) Museum

The SGH Museum is a fascinating place. Officially opened by Singapore President S.R. Nathan on 20 May 2005, the museum is a curious place containing various medical artefacts and records presented in an interactive manner. It is housed in the historic Bowyer Block within the grounds of Singapore General Hospital.

The SGH Museum traces the hospital's history of more than 180 years from its humble beginnings in 1821 as a wooden shed near the Singapore River to what it is today - a modern and well-equipped hospital offering the best in medical care.

The present site of the hospital originally had three blocks - Upper, Middle and Lower Blocks. These blocks were later renamed Bowyer, Stanley and Norris in 1946 after World War II. Today, only Bowyer Block with its iconic clock tower remains.

Through the exhibits, visitors also learn about life in the hospital during the Japanese Occupation, and the staff who cared for the sick and wounded tirelessly during the war. Get to know many of the great doctors who have devoted their lives to helping others in SGH including our very own former President, Benjamin Sheares.

Also on display are various antiquated medical equipment such as the first X-ray machine, a dentist chair and an early dialysis machine which are significant to the development of medical specialties in Singapore.
