Bukit Timah Nature Reserve
Did you know that Singapore is one of only two cities in the world to have a substantial area of primary rainforest
(Rio de Janeiro being the other city)?
Bukit Timah Nature Reserve is located just 12km from the city centre.
The pristine 164 hectare reserve has more species of trees growing in it than all of North America.
Standing at 163.6m, Bukit Timah Hill, which is the tallest hill in Singapore, is also located within the reserve.
In the late 19th century, several forest reserves were established in Singapore. All of them were worked for
timber with the exception of Bukit Timah Reserve.
Today, only three areas, including the Bukit Timah Reserve, have remained. These areas have been designated as
Nature Reserves and set aside for the protection and propagation of the indigenous flora and fauna of Singapore.
Bukit Timah Nature Reserve is very popular with local nature lovers. Many Singaporeans also come here to stroll, jog
or hike. There are cycling trails around the reserve's boundaries for cyclists.
While you are here, make a picnic stop at the Hindhede Quarry and enjoy the breathtaking beauty of the place.
If you are visiting, make sure to wear comfortable walking shoes and light clothing. It is also a good idea to bring
water and insect repellent.
