Asian Civilisations Museum
Founded in 1997, the Asian Civilisations Museum is part of the three institutions that devolved from the old National Museum.
As its name suggests, the museum
specialises in Pan-Asian cultures and civilisations, and it is the first museum in the region to do so.
It is a remarkable resource for learning about Singapore’s
heritage as it traces the histories of Singapore’s early immigrants who came from China, Southeast Asia, South Asia and West Asia.
The museum first opened in what was originally the Tao Nan School at Armenian Street on 22 April 1997 with exhibits that were mostly focused on the Chinese civilisation.
It later shifted its focus to Peranakan culture and history.
As the museum expanded, it moved to the newly restored Empress Place premises in 2003. Designed by engineer J.F.A. McNair and built by convict labour in the 1860s,
the historical landmark building of more than 130 years used to be a government office during Singapore’s colonial days.
The location is also of historical
significance as it was where Sir Stamford Raffles landed in 1819. Today, the 14,000m² building houses 11 thematic galleries showcasing more than 1,300 artefacts
from Asia.
These exhibits span a breathtaking 5,000 years of Asian cultures and make up one of the most comprehensive collections in the region. The displays incorporate
the use of multi-media and interactive technology to enhance visitors’ experiences. Changing special exhibitions also take place throughout the year.
Note: ACM (Armenian Street) has reopened in April 2008 and now houses the Peranakan Museum.
