Singapore Art Museum (SAM) The Singapore Art Museum boasts the largest public collection of 20th century Southeast Asian artworks in the world.
Founded in 1996 as one of three institutions (the other two being Asian Civilisations Museum and Singapore History Museum which is
now known as the National Museum of Singapore) that devolved from the old National Museum, the Singapore Art Museum specialises in
modern and contemporary visual arts from Singapore and the Southeast Asia region.
Conveniently located in the city's museum district, the Singapore Art Museum is housed in the restored 19th century St. Joseph's
Institution building along Bras Basah Road.
The building was gazetted as a national monument in 1992 and restoration works have seen its original features preserved.
The museum's permanent collection sees more than 7,000 pieces of art displayed in two exhibitions - Imaging Selves and Landscape in
Southeast Asian Art. It has also played host to several international exhibitions such as Leonardo da Vinci :Scientist-Inventor-Artist,
Monet to Moore: Millennium Gift of The Sara Lee Corporation and many others.
Besides being an exhibition space for its art collection, the museum also aims to promote art awareness through its diverse list
of programmes including, but not limited to, lectures, performances and other fringe activities.
If you have time for only one art museum, make it the Singapore Art Museum.
